Our world is becoming increasingly competitive, businesses have a shorter life span, and many companies that we grew up with and were household names, no longer exist. Some may be local or regional, and there are many national chains gone for good. I bet if you think about it, a few will come to you; Woolworth s and Circuit City, just to name a few, are now gone. Organizations are seeking a competitive advantage, and they are aware that our future environment will continue to evolve with technological advancements. Human resource management has been embraced by management due to its role in providing a competitive advantage. How this is accomplished by today s strategically-oriented human resources management is the topic of Chapter 3.
Chapter 3 begins with the basics of the management planning process and a review of the importance of having a plan. Without a plan, how do you know where you are going or if you achieved anything when you get there Think about the white water rafting scenario, where you find yourself in turbulent waters with everyone jumping ship or being thrown overboard; how do you gain control and navigate through the rough waters to the calm without a paddle or plan
In order to maintain a competitive advantage, we will review the importance of each step in the strategic management process. If you recall, this has a SWOT analysis in step two. This is like doing a performance evaluation or an audit of your company s strengths and weaknesses. It also evaluates the external environment for opportunities and threats by considering the competition as well as political and economic trends affecting the organization. You want to know whether the company is going in the right direction, given the challenges the analysis uncovered. Once the options are created, reviewed, and decided upon, the organization s strategic plan becomes a hierarchy of goals, policies, and procedures. Then, the performance of the plan is evaluated.
